CAVCaM Vision & Goals
Vision statement
The overriding vision of DRI's Center for Advanced Visualization, Computation and Modeling (CAVCaM) is to utilize developing technologies in computer graphics, computer interfaces, and scientific computing for the enhancement of environmental science research and other DRI scientific endeavors.
Goals
The efforts to achieve this vision lead to these primary goals:
- to maintain state-of-the-art visualization hardware and software;
- to team with DRI researchers to improve their abilities to collect, simulate and analyze scientific information on the environment;
- to produce top tier visualization software that can be used by the broader scientific community;
- to produce top tier visualization productions suitable for education of lay people.
In support of the vision and primary goals, secondary goals include:
- to port existing visualization software to make it work in CAVCaM immersive, stereo and widescreen environments;
- to port existing visualization software such that it can directly read data formats in common usage at DRI;
- to establish a suite of tools for developing high quality visualization products;
- to collaborate on grant proposals with DRI and other researchs to help advance visualization, computation and modeling techniques in service to scientific research;
- to distribute content to public distribution outlets (e.g. local TV news, PBS/Discovery channel, science museums/planetariums).
